Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Unpuzzle your past through participation in special interest groups offered as a benefit of your membership in the Lee County Genealogical Society. These small, informal groups of interest to researchers include:

Beginners Study Group – beginning approaches to genealogical problem solving for LCGS members.

One-on-one personal research consultations by appointment only on the 1st Friday of each month between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. and the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Fort Myers-Lee County Public Library. Members should contact Carolyn Ford for a consultation appointment.

English Roots Group – for members researching ancestors in England. 

This group usually meets from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the 2nd Friday of each month October through May in the LCGS Resourch Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Family Tree Maker – members meet to discuss application issues, show program operations and features, answer questions by various means including laptop computers for the genealogy software program Family Tree Maker program. 

This group usually meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.

A second gathering is usually held on the 3rd Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Pine Island Library, 10700 Russell Road NW, Bokeelia.

Genealogy Online Group – members discuss and share using the Internet as a research tool and develop their online searching techniques. The Online group will be utilizing the power of the group to break down brick walls.

This group usually meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month from September through May from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

German Roots Group – for members researching ancestors from Germany and other German-speaking countries.

This group usually meets from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the 2nd Friday of each month October through May in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Irish Roots Group – for members researching ancestors from Ireland.

This group usually meets from 1 pm to 3 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Midwest Roots Group – an informal discussion and research group for members whose ancestors lived in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

This group meets in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers during the months of September, October, January, February, March and April. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

New York/New England Roots Group – of interest to members researching their ancestor who lived in New York and the New England states. This group will focus on how to research various record groups in those states. New York and New England research presents unique challenges. Members will have opportunities to share information about their research experiences in these states.

This group usually meets from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month November through May in the Research Room at the Fort Myers-Lee County Public Library, 2050 Central Avenue., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Pine Island Group – an informal discussion group of members for genealogists living on and near Pine Island.

This group usually meets from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month October through May in the Conference Room at the Pine Island Library, 10700 Russell Road NW, Bokeelia. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Quebec Group – for members researching French-Canadian ancestors.

This group usually meets from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the 1st Wednesday of each month October through May at M. Schin's home. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Roots Magic – Sharing, showing operations and answering questions by various means including laptop computers, using the genealogical software program RootsMagic 4.

This group usually meets from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, on the 4th Thursday of each month January through October in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Twigs – a forum for discussion, sharing and problem solving.

This group usually meets from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the 1st Thursday of each month in the LCGS Research Room at the Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Check the Events area for more information on when this group is meeting. 

Writers Group – for members wishing to go beyond recording names, dates and places, to interweave interesting facts about their ancestors' lives, placing individuals in a social and historical context.
